How to get rid of smoke smells in your home

FAQs About Smoke Smells

It depends on how frequently and for how long somebody smoked in a certain area. If they smoked for years and never aired out a room, it can take a very long time. However, in general, after smoking a cigarette and quickly airing the room, it should only take a few hours for the smoke smell to dissipate. In more serious cases, it can take a few days for the smoke smell to disperse.

If you need to remove the smoke smell quickly, we definitely recommend airing out your house. Open all doors and windows and let the smell escape naturally. An ozone generator is also a good idea. You can set it to a timer and let it do the work while you’re out of the house.

Professionals tend to recommend ozone generators for extreme cases. However, airing out a room naturally is also a very popular and successful method.

Febreze Air actually works to eliminate odors rather than just masking them. It uses a chemical compound called cyclodextrin, which absorbs odors (2). However, it’s also scented so that it will leave behind a pleasant scent. Unfortunately, though, if you have extreme smoke smells, it may not work. Spraying Febreze may actually mix together with the smell of smoke and create a new unpleasant scent.

3. Repaint Ceilings Walls

Ready to get down to business? Let’s start with the biggest chunk of the job – ceilings and walls. This part may not sound like your idea of fun, but it’s necessary, and the reward is huge.

First, you will need to wash the surface. Mix a cup of white vinegar with 2 cups of warm water and ½ cup of baking soda. Dip a sponge in the mix and start wiping down the ceilings and the walls. Washing the ceilings and walls with vinegar can both deodorize and clean the surface. Wipe with a clean sponge after. Repeat 2-3 times.

Next, repaint the ceilings and walls with multiple coats of paint, depending on how stained the walls are. It is crucial to wash and dry the surface first, as simply repainting the wall might not stop the nicotine stains from seeping through. Also, paint sticks better to a cleaner surface. Again, if you’re willing go that extra mile, you can apply a layer of odor-blocking primer before regular paint. Odor-blocking primers are very effective at preventing odor molecules and stains from penetrating the new paint.

Don’t want to use chemicals? Here’s how to get smoke smell out of your house naturally

If you’re concerned about toxic or harsh chemicals that may be in some cleaning products, there are several naturally-derived things you can do. Place activated charcoal, apple cider vinegar, or white vinegar in a bowl in each room. If you are a coffee lover, you could also use coffee grounds. All these substances can help to absorb odors in a non-invasive way.

You can also mask the smoke smell with vanilla extract. Use a cloth to wipe it over different surfaces in the home, or put some on cotton balls. You can also do the same with essential oils or use scented candles to get rid of the smell. House plants are also excellent at absorbing chemicals and purifying the air. Buy some and place them throughout the house.

5. Wash Windows and Window Coverings

Moving on, window coverings are also great absorbers of cigarette smoke. You will definitely need to remove all window coverings in order to clean them, whether they’re blinds, shades, curtains, or drapes.

Soak non-wooden blinds in a bathtub full of all-purpose cleaner mixed with water and a cup of vinegar. Let blinds soak for 10-15 minutes, then scrub thoroughly and hang to dry. For curtains and drapes, you can take them to a dry cleaner or replace them. If your drapes are washable, wash them in the hottest setting allowed. Clean windows thoroughly by spraying vinegar onto the window surface and wipe it with a microfiber cloth. Repeat 2-3 times, then wipe with a clean cloth.

Removing cigarette smell from your breath

  • Brush your teeth. If you smoke, brushing, flossing, gargling with mouthwash and using a tongue cleaner after each cigarette is the best way to remove odor. Brushing your teeth after each cigarette will also help reduce the staining that tar and nicotine can cause on your teeth.
  • Try a lozenge. Hard candies, cough drops, breath mints, and gum can also help keep the smell in check.

Keep in mind that cigarettes cause the inside of your nose to smell, which can also affect the smell of your breath.
