I'd go for horizontal lines on the garage door in keeping with the horizontal lines of the brick and low pitched ranch roof. Search MCM garage door, or Modern garage door and it will give you some ideas….See More

How do you calculate a home’s square footage?

To calculate your new home’s square footage, you’ll need to go room by room. Measure the length and width of a room, then multiply them together to get the square footage of that room. Once you have the square footage of all spaces within the house, add them together to get the total square footage of the home.

What is the square footage of a two car garage?

While garages come in many sizes, the average garage to store two cars is around 676 square feet. Which is 26 feet in length and 26 feet in width.

Things to Consider When Planning a 4-car Garage

Below are some factors to keep in mind when planning your new 4-car garage.

If you have lots of gardening or maintenance equipment that you store in your garage, plus four vehicles, you’re going to want some extra wiggle room around the cars. Many people store items like snowboards, bicycles, and sports equipment in their garages.

If you have many items like the ones mentioned above, you should consider opting for an oversized 4-car garage, so you have plenty of extra room to fit your items.

Other Machinery

Do you have a lawnmower or a snowplow you need to store? Machinery and large equipment should factor into your final decision on the dimensions of your garage.

Vehicle Usage

If you only use two of your vehicles, or one, most of the time, a tandem garage may be a good choice for you. Tandem garages fit better on some properties and only require one garage door, saving money during construction.

Property Size

Of course, you can only build a garage as large as your property will allow. Make sure you know how much available space you have on your property.

It’s always wise to set a budget when starting a large project like building a garage. Consider how much space you actually need and set your budget accordingly.

Minimum Single Car Garage Size

10 ft wide x 18 ft long 180 sq ft

10 ft wide x 18 ft long 180 sq ft

The absolute minimum one car garage size is 10 ft wide by 18 ft long. This kind of scaled-down space is only appropriate for compact vehicles. A garage this small is forced to use the minimum single garage door width of 8 feet instead of the more common 9-foot wide door.

You won’t find many garages this small because of the increased risk of damaging the car, side mirrors, and fenders through the narrow doorway. The minimal space to open car doors once inside is another drawback.

The recommended minimum one car garage size is two feet wider and longer. Dimensions are 12 ft wide by 20 ft long.

What Vehicles Fit in the Smallest One Car Garage?

A small one-car garage is a good fit for these vehicles:

  • Compact and sports cars (5-6′ wide, 14-16′ long)
  • Quads and ATVs (45-50″ wide, 80-85″ long)

Standard Car Sizes

It’s important to understand the standard dimensions of different vehicles.

This will help you know if your vehicle will fit in your garage before writing a big check to the repair shop.

Many people don’t have to worry about squeezing a motorcycle into their garage. For reference, they are around 6 feet long, 4 feet high, and 2.5 feet wide.

You can expect compact, mid-size, and full-size cars to fall within specific average dimensions, between 14 feet and 17 feet. The width ranges between 5.5 feet and 6.5 feet. The height won’t be a problem, and they can stand as tall as 6 foot 2 inches.

Trucks are obviously bigger than cars.

They can be 17 to 20 feet long and 6 to 7 feet wide. Their height varies slightly due to how common lift kits are, but they usually stand around 6.5 feet tall.

SUV and Minivans

SUVs and Minivans have a little more variation in their measurements. On average, their length ranges from 16 feet to 18 feet, and their width is between 6 and 7 feet. Their height can be as low as 5.5 feet and as high as 7 feet.

Attached vs Detached

Another important thing to consider is whether you want an attached or detached garage. If you want an attached garage, it has to come with the house. It has the benefit of sharing the same heating and cooling system.

On the other hand, if you’re looking for privacy, detached garages are the way to go. Since they’re not attached to your home and are a stand alone building, you don’t have to worry about making too much noise. It’s like having your own private apartment.

In some instances, you don’t have to make a

In some instances, you don’t have to make a choice. Give the amount of space you own, you can build a detached garage while still having an attached garage. This gives you the best of both worlds and a lot more storage. This is something to consider if you need more storage, have more than three cars or need a lot of extra living space.

Danley’s is here to build you a detached garage. No matter the size or roof shape you want, we’re here to help. We custom build it from the ground up ensuring that the job is done correctly and efficiently. Get a free quote now for your new detached garage.

The Right Size Garage Depends On How You Use It

A garage isn’t just for storing a car. People across the world have unique uses for their garages. In many cases, there’s more room in a garage than what is required for parking cars.

Let’s take a look at some of the more popular uses.

Throw a TV on your garage wall and some couches, and you have a little relaxation corner. If you don’t have a designated Man Cave, the garage might be the perfect space for it.

Living Space

Whether or not you have a loft in your garage, you can still put together an additional room and create some living space. Using part of a garage for living space is usually cheaper than building another room in your home.

A garage is a perfect place for a workshop for many people. Some large tables and overhead lighting along the back wall will give you more than enough space.

Work on DIY projects and have a designated space for your tools where you can get dirty.

Perhaps the most common use for a garage is storage. People pile up miscellaneous items that they gather over the years.

If you have decorations or games that are only used a few times a year, carving out a section of your living space won’t make sense. That’s why so many people use the garage for storage.

People with two-car garages might use half of the garage for storage and the other half for their car.

Car Repairs

Your car will already be parked in your garage. Why not get some tools and a jack to create a space for car repairs?

You can change your oil in your garage and won’t have to worry about picking a nice sunny day to do the oil change outside.

Store Other Vehicles

A garage can also shelter the other toys you have. 4-wheelers, electric scooters, and motorcycles can easily call the garage their home between uses.

Single Car Garage Cost

Prices vary quite a bit due to a multitude of factors (materials used, contractor prices, siding types, overall size, etc.). Still, most one-car garages fall into an average price range

As you review these, keep in mind that a one-car garage (attached or detached) can boost home values by $15,000-$20,000, especially in colder areas that get a lot of snow and ice.

You can expect to pay the following ranged amounts for attached and detached garages.

Attached Garage Cost

  • $7,500 (smaller garage) – $11,000 (larger garage)
  • Attached garages make use of your home’s existing electricity, heating and cooling, and walls, making the project less costly overall.

Detached Garage Cost

  • $9,000 (smaller garage) – $14,000 (larger garage)
  • On the smaller end, a detached garage is comparable in price to a large attached garage.

Because detached garages are separate structures, you will need to add plumbing and electric systems to a detached garage to put in lights, sinks, a bathroom, a washing machine, etc.

Standard Garage Height

The standard height for all garages no matter how many cars or if it is tandem or not is between 7 and 8 feet. The average height of a passenger vehicle is about 6.5 feet, so most cars can fit. Some garages are as tall as 12 feet, but even a large pickup truck should fit in an 8-foot tall garage.

Standard Height in Feet

Most garages will be 7 feet tall, as most people don’t have a reason to have a super tall ceiling in their garage. As mentioned, passenger vehicles are usually shorter than 6.5 feet.

Standard Height in Meters

The standard height of a garage in meters is just over 2 meters. To be exact, the average height of a garage is 2.1 meters.

Note that there is a difference between the minimum size of a 2-car garage and the average size of a 2-car garage.

Have you ever met an average-sized person? The problem with average is that no one person perfectly fits the “average” mold. It simply means a middle ground, and your needs may be above average or less than average. Let’s break it down the average garage size question further:

a. Width: What is the best width of a 2-car garage?

The average width of a car is around 6 to 6.5 feet. Add a few feet on either side to get in and out of a vehicle and you will soon be close to the 20-foot width of the minimum garage size. If your property has space and your township gives permission, we recommend going at least 24’ wide. You will love the extra width for getting in and out of your car when it is parked inside the garage. If you can’t go 24’ wide on your garage, a 22’ wide garage would still give you a bit more space to play with.

b. Length: How long should your 2-car garage be?

That all depends again on the size of your vehicle and what you hope to do inside the two car garage besides parking. Most of us want to store more in our two-car garage than Old Bessie and her sidekick. Add an ATV, a motorcycle, or even a few bicycles and your garage can quickly become crowded. Put some shelves on the walls, or add a workbench or two and watch your floor space shrink!

c. It depends on the size of your vehicle and what else you wish to store

Keep in mind that a typical sedan (here we go again) is about 17 feet long. If you want room to get around the back of your vehicle with the garage door closed you may want to go more than 24 feet deep. You might also consider adding 4 more feet for a workbench so you have space to tinker with the car inside. If you really want space to work on your vehicle inside the garage, then you should consider a 30’ long two car garage.

Bottom line, the average size two car garage is 24×24 or 24×30, but it also depends a lot on what you want to put inside. Note, we said “average sized garage,” not the minimum sized two car garage.

Here are a few visual aids from to help give think about what the best dimensions of a 2 car garage might be for you. It may help you decide to build bigger.
